Beware the Birdseed!

Once you've lived with peanut and nut allergies for a while or read enough articles about it, you eventually hear that birdseed can sometimes contain peanuts and/or nuts. My children recently visited the Children's Museum in Easton (Massachusetts) for the Spring Fling. They were in the care of another adult  and came home with little bags of birdseed. I immediately said that we should not put our hands in the bags because they could contain peanuts or tree nuts. I poured a bag of birdseed on the ground and sure enough there were peanuts in the mix. There were whole peanuts--not in the shell--but still in their skins. I realize that if you do not live with food allergies and you do not know anyone who does, this would not seem concerning in the least. After all, it's food, not chemicals! The problem is, for people like my son and so many others, a little bag of homemade birdseed containing corn, peanuts and seeds is like a little bag of poison.

This was good reminder for me that it's a good time to check in with the kids' teachers to make sure they're aware of the potential risk for contact with nuts, peanuts, seeds and other things for food allergic students as they embark on springtime gardening and outside projects at school.

A & J Bakery Biscotti is the Snack of the Day on Rachel Ray

You probably know I am a huge fan of A & J Bakery, the bakery closest to home for us where my children can choose and eat anything without worry of an allergic reaction or cross-contamination. The novelty of being able to eat anything there just doesn't wear off! Everything there is peanut-free, nut-free, and they also make gluten-free, egg-free, and dairy-free baked goods too--just ask! Today A & J's Biscotti (it's nut-free, peanut-free, and they also have gluten-free too!) is the featured snack of the day on Rachel Ray. Way to go, Joe and Amy!

If you haven't tried A & J Bakery's Biscotti, what are you waiting for?! You can order online, on the phone, or in person if you are in the Rhode Island area. Last time I was there, I snapped a photo of just some of the biscotti they make. Sooo yummy!

Allergen Free Cookie Buttons May Contain Peanuts, Tree Nuts

This annoyed me. Maybe I am a little grumpy today, because I think I discovered this a while ago but did not complain about it before. Why, oh why, are Ian's Cookie Buttons--even the wheat-free, gluten-free cookie buttons--made in a facility that uses peanuts and tree nuts?! That's just wrong! It says "even kids with food allergies" can enjoy them, but they contain soy, egg, and dairy and may contain peanuts and nuts. Cookies don't usually contain fish or shellfish, so the only major food allergy they are safe for is wheat.  Hmmph! Now that we've learned we have tree nut allergies in addition to peanut allergy, I've crossed off a few more snacks from our safe list. I am very, very grateful we can still enjoy dairy, egg, soy and wheat--that's a lot of foods and makes a huge difference in options. Still, I am a little disappointed with Ian's on the cookie button thing. You'd think a company as food allergy aware as Ian's would make a point to make the cookies a bit more allergy friendly. We do still enjoy those Ian's allergen-free meals. The convenience is unbeatable!

Food Allergies and Fussy Easting

Every so often, I come across a commentary dismissing "perceived food allergies" as fussy eating. Of course, I know my peanut and nut allergic child has true allergies because I have witnessed unmistakable reactions, confirmed later by testing. I imagine it is difficult to misread someone's throat closing up. He is, however, a rather particular eater and I have always wondered if that is related to his food allergies. Is my guy unique among food allergic kids or do other food allergy families have fussy eaters too? Left to his own devices, I think mine would live off of bread and pink lady apples!

Are we unique? Or can you relate?
