Homemade Barbecue Sauce

The results of our survey of barbecue sauce companies are in today.  Not in the mood for store-bought barbecue sauce?  No problem!  Here is a recipe for homemade, food allergy friendly barbecue sauce courtesy of Nancy MacDonald and Chef Rick Tarantino of the television cooking show "You Won't Even Miss It".  It's dairy-free, gluten-free, peanut-free and tree nut-free.  Enjoy!

Barbecue Sauce
Nancy MacDonald & Rick Tarantino

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon minced onion
4 cloves of minced garlic
2 tablespoons chipotle pepper powder
6 oz tomato paste
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup gluten and dairy free Worcestershire sauce
2 cups gluten and dairy free ketchup
1 teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
1 teaspoon pepper (or more to taste)

Heat up a medium saucepan over medium heat.  Add oil, onion, and garlic and saute for 2 -3 minutes until onions are soft.  Add remaining ingredients and simmer 20 - 30 minutes, stirring constantly until it thickens.  Brush onto chicken or ribs during last 10 minutes of cooking on the grill or in the oven.
