What Next? Food Allergy Friendly Board Games?

An entertaining food allergy blog which I visit regularly is Comments from the Peanut Free Gallery. Jennifer (of the Peanut Free Gallery) finds these odd uses of peanuts and writes funny commentaries about them.  I enjoy them!

I wonder what she would say about this game I found in a toy catalog which came in Wednesday's mail!? I feel a little silly admitting this, but when I saw this game--"Count Your Peanuts! Math Game"--I thought "Blech!"  I had to remind myself that a few years ago, I would not have given the game and its peanuts a second thought.  Isn't it funny how food allergies change your perspective?  Is it just me?  What do you think?  Maybe we should send in suggestions for alternatives.  (joking) What else do elephants eat?

I actually take no offense at all. Peanuts do exist and are a great food for many, many people--just not for our kids. And it's good for our kids to easily recognize what a peanut looks like. On this game board they can touch without being in danger and hey, elephants do eat peanuts right? It's just that there seem to be so many things to be offended about these days. I choose not to be.

Thanks for your comment, Nicole. I'm not actually offended by the game either. The post's a little "tongue in cheek". Jennifer over at the Peanut Free Gallery's better at making light of these things. She's got some intriguing pumpkin photos now, including one which looks mysteriously like a peanut covered pumpkin!

Jennifer,

I am not doing well today. I just wrote you this long, brilliant witty comment about how honored I was that you mentioned me in your blog, and even did a post about some sort of interesting peanut product. Of course it did not post correctly, so now I can not remember what great brilliant witty things I said.

Anyways, thanks Jennifer, I love to visit your blog for all the great info.

My first reaction is the same as yours...lol! I realize, however, that it might prove to be a good opportunity for my ds with the PN allergy to be able to get a good up close look at his enemy :) At least, that is my silly little effort at looking at the bright side.

My instant thought would be "blech" too. It's funny how the whole thought of peanut becomes an enemy when just one member of our family is allergic. Without really thinking about it, we started telling the peanuts in the counting book "no no no!" with my allergic 1 year old.

My daughter loved Candyland and we always wished it didn't have all that peanut stuff on it. Wouldn't it be great if they would have a "peanut-free" version??

Offended by peanuts! Good grief. Of all the things for people to be offended by. My daughter loves this game. I highly recommend it.

Tracy, thanks for your comment. Do you or a loved one have a peanut allergy? I don't actually find peanuts offensive, but we spend a lot of time trying to avoid them because of my son's allergy. It is something of a routine to keep my eyes open for peanuts and steer clear! I am glad to hear it is a fun game, maybe we'll give it a try.
