Does Your School Have a Full-Time Nurse?

Here is a link to a very sad and disturbing story about a girl with asthma and allergies who died from an asthma attack at school in Washington state. The school has a nurse who rotates between schools and the staff on-hand apparently were not adequately trained to deal with asthma emergencies. The child had a doctor prescribed inhaler and epi-pen at school.

Parents seeking millions against school district for asthma attack death.

This is very scary. We plan on sending our peanut allergy son to a small Catholic school that I'm pretty sure does not have a nurse at all. I think only the public schools have a nurse in our town. The poor family...what a sweet little girl.

It is extremely scary. The fact that the public preschool is located in an elementary school building with a full time school nurse was one of the big factors that made me feel okay about my son attending preschool. Based on news articles over the last year, however, I have realized we are very lucky in our town to have a full time nurse at each school because that is not the case everywhere. When I think back to my childhood, it certainly wasn't the case at my elementary school!

That poor child...and her parents. She knew she was in trouble, too. That's the part that breaks my heart most of all.

Thanks for sharing this tragic story--all of us should find out what's what with our medical office staff at school. We have health aides at school and a district nurse, only.

So far, so good--but I'm sending this story to the principal as a "heads up" of what can go wrong.

My heart goes out to that family.
