The Peanut Butter "Situation"

There has been so much--understandably--in the news lately about salmonella and the peanut butter recall. I remember several weeks ago the debate on the Juggle on wsj.com concerned peanut butter bans in schools. What a swell of emotions! Take a look at yesterday's topic and the comments: Coping with the Peanut Butter Salmonella Scare. The focus gradually shifts from the suggested topic, the salmonella/peanut butter recall, to food allergies and peanut butter bans, following the comment of one "food allergy mom".

I feel for the families and people the salmonella scare impacts. Even though we don't eat peanut butter or foods containing peanuts, I still feel affected by it. Remember the recent Chicago Tribune investigation about labeling food allergens and recalls? Aren't we all victims of a food inspection and food safety system that isn't working? Let's hope things improve, and soon.

I agree with this posters comment completely. Even though we're not eating PB, there's no excuse for the current lack of food safety. It truly affects us all and in an ironic twist, it may be the peanut butter salmonella scare that finally alerts people to the realities of food allergies.

That would be ironic! It does affect all of us, and it's really alarming just how unsafe our food supply really is. I hope bankruptcy is just the tip of the iceberg for Peanut Corp. Some jail time is in order.
