Uber-Allergy Friendly Condiment/Dressing/Marinade

I was recently contacted by Kenzoil to sample their product and share my thoughts about it with those of you who stop by Food Allergy Buzz. I have to confess I especially enjoyed trying this product! I received a lovely 5 ounce bottle of Kenzoil and am so glad I had the opportunity to try it. It's a zesty, garlicky olive oil based condiment reminiscent of pesto. Everyone here gave it a thumbs up! We've tried it with pasta (repeatedly!) and also to dip our bread, and when we finish this complimentary bottle, we'll definitely buy another. Not only is it tasty but it is free of "gluten, dairy and casein, nuts, tree nuts, soy, corn, eggs, legumes, wheat, fish, shellfish, potato, rice, yeast and sugar". In addition, the only product made on Kenzoil's equipment and in their facility is Kenzoil, so cross-contamination worries may be set aside.

If you live in the Midwest, you may find Kenzoil in your local Whole Foods Market and also in some upscale grocery stores in Michigan. Otherwise, Kenzoil may be purchased online at www.kenzoil.com--they ship across the United States. It comes in a 5 ounce size as well as a 10 ounce size, and they are currently offering first time buyer pack offer with a promo code.

A big THANKS to Heather and the rest of the Kenzoil crew for contacting me and offering me the opportunity to try Kenzoil--you have a great product and I wish you much success!

What's In That Breading? Angel Food Ministries' Allergen Free Box

For some time now, Angel Food Ministries has offered an allergen-free box of breaded meat and poultry. I have tried a few times to get additional information about the breading before taking the plunge and trying it with my peanut allergic son. Breaded meat, poultry and fish scare me a little because he has broken out in hives from breaded chicken and fish made by companies which supposedly do not use any peanuts or peanut products. I can't help but think perhaps the breading somehow contains traces of peanut and I'd like some reassurance before we try Angel Food Ministries' allergen-free box. I telephoned in May and also sent an email. I never received an answer to my questions. I telephoned again last week, leaving a message. Again, no answer. I have to be honest--the lack of information and failure to answer what I consider to be a basic question for food allergic consumers does not inspire confidence.

Now I ask again here, with my Food Allergy Buzz cap on--no longer just as a mother of a peanut allergic child--but as a food allergy blogger and active member of the online food allergy community.  Perhaps this public forum will finally elicit an answer? Can anyone provide additional information about the breading on the meat and poultry in the allergen-free box from Angel Food Ministries? Like so many families in the U.S., we're trying our best to stretch our dollars. The allergen-free box sounds good, but I need more information. I need to know if everything, every morsel and ingredient of food in that allergen-free box comes from a dedicated peanut-free facility. I need to know more about the risk of cross-contamination and possible trace amounts of peanuts and nuts. The website says "Processed to eliminate the eight top serious allergens: Peanuts, Soybeans, Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacea, Tree Nuts and Gluten (wheat, rye and barley)." What exactly does that mean, in terms of risk of cross-contamination?

I will copy and paste this post in an email to Angel Food Ministries and will be sure to share any answer I receive with all of you here. If anyone has friend at Angel Food Ministries, I would very much appreciate it if you could direct them to this post so I can find out more about that breading! In the meantime, thanks for your help!

Thank you, Thanita, for sharing this disturbing and personal story--you raise some very important questions.

Is Change Coming to U.S. Food Labels?

Did you see the articles yesterday regarding possible changes to U.S. food labels? Among the suggested changes would be to have minor ingredients and allergens listed separately, with allergens in red.

Here is an article from the Well Blog on the subject: A Makeover for Food Labels.  Ms. Pope also links to other sources with additional information and insight on the topic.

What's your opinion on the suggested changes?

Meet 3 More #foodallergy #celiac Twitter Party Sponsors

The party starts at 8:30 pm eastern time this evening. The hashtag is #foodallergy. Our panelists are Gwen Smith (Editor), Simon Clarke (Food Editor) and Susan Clemens (Moderator) of Allergic Living Magazine. Yesterday, we introduced Solutions to Savor, Allergies and Me, and Fancypants Bakery. Today, I am pleased to introduce our other three sponsors.

Kinnikinnick Foods is an amazing food allergy and celiac friendly company based in Canada. Kinnikinnick has a dedicated wheat-free, gluten-free and nut/peanut free facility--remarkable, isn't it? They have some wonderful products available in a number of stores. I even spied some safe doughnuts in the freezer section at the grocery store, gluten-free, nut-free and peanut-free--not an easy combo to find! They also have Kinnikinnick TV, including an excellent video about the importance of gluten-free facilities and equipment. It puts a whole new light on cross-contamination.You should really check it out!

Navan Foods is owned by food allergy mom, Jennifer Elizondo. The customer service at Navan is second to none and they have an extensive selection of food allergy and celiac friendly foods from which to choose. They also have a brick and mortar store, located in Virgina Beach, VA. I hope to get down there one of these days!

Sweet Alexis is a wonderful nut-free, peanut-free, dairy-free and egg-free bakery owned by Michele Fellows, a fellow food allergy mom. Please take a look at a post I wrote about Sweet Alexis early in 2009: Sweet, Sweet Alexis and Her Amazing Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free and Peanut-Free Bakery. Michele's baked goods are exquisite; if you read my post--linked above--you'll see how much we LOVED those Sweet Alexis goodies!

Thank you to Allergic Living Magazine and to all our sponsors--we couldn't do it without you! Looking forward to seeing you this evening.

Meet 3 #foodallergy #celiac Twitter Party Sponsors

In anticipation of Friday's Twitter Party, I would like to introduce our sponsors.  Today, we feature three, and Friday, we'll feature the remaining three. Please take a moment, stop by their websites, support their businesses and make some purchases! Now's the perfect time--holiday presents!

Allergies and Me
Allergies and Me is an online specialty food store specializing in foods for food allergic and celiac individuals. The site has a stunning selection of food allergy friendly foods and snacks. Clicking on the dairy-free tab alone brings up about 26 PAGES of products. Yes, 26 pages, that is not a typo! As you  may know, Allergies and Me is committed to supporting food allergy friendly organizations. We're very grateful to have their support as an advertiser here on Food Allergy Buzz, and they are also one of the sponsors for the upcoming Holidays with Food Allergies and Celiac Twitter Party on Friday, December 4.

We were pleased to do a Q & A with Allergies and Me founder, Jamie Stern a few months back, in September 2009. Here is an excerpt:

Please tell us more about yourself and your connection to food allergies, food intolerances and/or celiac disease.
We started this company after learning more about the difficulties of raising a child with multiple food allergies. Our best friends have a beautiful four-year-old boy, Jack, who is allergic to Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts and Tree Nuts.  Seeing first-hand what they were dealing with, from first diagnosis to subsequent life-threatening reactions, we made a decision to see how we could help. After researching the online resources available, my vision was formed. Allergiesandme.com was created to help families find a stress-free shopping opportunity to find essential and great tasting products specific to their needs. The website is also dedicated to providing resources for education, support networks and new recipes to try. We offer a platform for new cookbook authors and bloggers to promote their business, which in turn, helps our customers.

Fancypants Bakery
Fancypants Bakery is a lovely wholesale bakery located oh-so-close to home for me! Aren't I lucky?! I discovered their scrumptious cookies at a nearby supermarket a few years ago--imagine my delight when I learned they were nut-free/peanut-free and made in a dedicated facility. Jackpot!  I featured them in The Buzz Around New England about 2 years ago and they just keep getting better and better.

What more can I say? Please take a look at my May 2008 post, The Buzz Around New England: Nut-Free Cookies Get Fancy.

We're thrilled to have Fancypants Bakery as one of the sponsors for this Friday's Twitter Party!

Solutions to Savor
Solutions to Savor is a family business located in New Jersey. The owners are parents of food allergic children so you can be sure safe food options are a subject near and dear to their hearts. They understand the concerns, they live it and they want to make life better for others in the same or similar situations. They deliver locally and ship nationally, and are getting new products all the time. Keep your eye on them--I have a hunch they'll be growing by leaps and bounds in the next year--and stop by the site!

Thanks to Solutions to Savor for sponsoring Friday's Twitter Party.

I am looking forward to Friday's party! Stay tuned--our remaining three sponsors will be featured on Friday, and then Friday night, it's time to P-A-R-T-Y!

Twitter Party Tips

If you're new to Twitter, attending a Twitter Party can seem pretty complicated and even a bit daunting. Fear not! A couple of easy steps, and you'll be ready to watch the Tweets fly, and maybe...before the hour's up, you might even decide to Tweet too!

Basic Twitter Tips
If you think you might want to Tweet during the party, you will need to get a Twitter account. It's free and easy to do. They don't require much personal info at all to open an account. Just visit www.twitter.com and click on the Sign Up button on the right. You will be asked to provide your full name, a user name, a password and your email address. Having a Twitter account means you can Tweet a message to everyone and anyone on Twitter, provided you keep it to 140 characters or less in length. You can follow other people on Twitter who you think have interesting things to say and likewise, people can follow you! If someone unseemly follows you, you can always block them.

When you rest your cursor on a tweet on your screen, you'll see you have the option to reply or retweet. If you read a tweet that you think is worth repeating to your followers, you can retweet. You'll see the tweet with a RT in front, ready to send. Hitting reply automatically puts the screenname of the Twitter user you are replying to at the beginning of your Tweet. For example, if you reply to a Tweet from me, your reply would begin "@FoodAllergyBuzz".

Attending a Twitter Party
So, you've signed up for Twitter. You get how to reply, retweet and tweet. How do you participate in the Twitter Party? A few important things will make it easy for you.

Hashtags
First, you need to know what the hashtag is. For the Holidays with Food Allergies Party and all our Food Allergy Twitter Parties, we use #foodallergy. That means all tweets intended for the Food Allergy Twitter Party must include "#foodallergy" in that 140 character tweet or the people at the party won't see it! Using the hashtag enables everyone there to filter out tweets unrelated to the party. The tweets tend to come fast and furious during Twitter parties. It can be difficult to keep up. The last thing you need is unrelated Tweets interspersed with Twitter Party Tweets. That'll just confuse you and make your eyes go buggy!

Twitter Search
If you want to keep it simple, use Twitter Search. You can just type #foodallergy into the search box on the right side of your twitter page about a third of the way down. That brings you "real time" search results for tweets with #foodallergy. Sometimes it does not refresh as fast as you'd like, and you'll find it's difficult to keep up because while you're waiting for your search results to refresh, people are still tweeting away. It keeps things simple and uncluttered, though, and you can keep your Twitter page open in a separate window in case you wish to Tweet, Retweet, or Reply.

Twitter Dashboards
If you are comfortable with a very minimal amount of learning an application/tool, try a Twitter Dashboard, such as Tweetdeck or Tweetgrid. There are many. I find using a Twitter dashboard makes it easier to keep track of replies, direct messages, and #foodallergy tweets simultaneously. I recommend Tweetdeck--it's free and simple to use. You need to download it, but it is well worth the memory space if you plan to use Twitter on a regular basis. For the party itself, I recommend using 4 columns: Mentions, Direct Messages, a column for #foodallergy search results, and a column for your tweets. That way, you can see all of the relevant info simultaneously.

What If You Just Want to Observe & Not Use Twitter?

I am so glad that Robyn of Peanut Allergy Kid inquired about whether there was a way to make it easy for non-Twitter users to read the tweets during and after the party. Thanks to Robyn's suggestion, the party may be a bit more accessible to more members of the online food allergy community.

Do you have to use Twitter to read the Tweets? The answer is NO. Not to worry--you can read the party tweets without signing up for anything or downloading anything! I tried to make it as easy as possible and created a Blidget (Blog-Widget) over the weekend for #foodallergy Twitter Search results. It is located in the left sidebar here on Food Allergy Buzz. By the way, anyone who is so inclined can add the same blidget to their blog or website. If you click inside my Blidget, close to the top where it says #foodallergy - Twitter Search, you'll be taken straight to the search results for #foodallergy tweets on Twitter without typing a single character! If it works right, it's a pretty easy way to follow the party conversation. Occasionally, it is a bit finicky and slow to load. Overall, however, it is a fairly efficient and simple way to observe the party without any tricky accounts or columns or dashboards.

That's my quick and dirty lesson on how to attend a Twitter Party. I am sure I am leaving out quite a bit, but hopefully this is enough to get you started! Please also take a look at a related post about Twitter Parties and how they work over at Best Allergy Sites. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me jenniferATfoodallergybuzz.com--I'll reply as quick as I can. Hope to see you at the party!
